SAFETY TIPS

E-SCRAP & COMPLIANCE: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

In the recycling industry, workplace safety and environmental protection work together to help your business comply with industry legislation. Having a clear understanding of risks is an important step for leaders to take in order to avoid incidents that could derail business success.

Below are a few considerations you and your employees should know and understand:

1)    Be aware of hazardous materials in the products you are handling.

Circuit boards, computers, mobile phones, tablets, and hard drives. You might handle all of these products on a regular basis, and they all contain hazardous materials that can be harmful to both your team and the environment.

Hazardous materials include:

●    Mercury
●    Lead
●    Lithium
●    Cadmium

Radiation Awareness is key.

Know the hazardous materials and have the proper equipment and procedures in place to avoid health and safety, or environmental incidents.

2) Understand your liabilities when handling products that may contain sensitive data.

Products that contain hazardous materials can also contain sensitive data. In the wrong hands, this data results in a security breach: a major problem for your customers and your business.

Understand how legislation like the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) can create liabilities for your business and avoid security issues that can cost you and your business more money in the long run.

3)   Work with a downstream partner that understands compliance and has the credentials to prove it.

Choosing a certified electronics recycling and IT asset destruction partner to process the e-scrap you collect is one of the most important decisions you can make when it comes to keeping your business safe. Look for partners with the following credentials:

●    R2 Certified
●    NAID Certified
●    MOE Licensed
●    Verified by EPRA (RQP) to conform to the Canadian Electronics Recycling Standards
●    ISO 14001

Do not cut corners when it comes to workplace safety and environmental protection. Understand your liabilities and responsibilities when it comes to legislative compliance. By mitigating your risk, you are maximizing value, and ensuring success for years to come.
