MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMatt Zubick photo

Opening your business’s doors for facility tours can seem a bit intimidating. Though most of us have little free time to spare, offering to teach policymakers

In June, CARI submitted comments on proposed white goods regulations in Ontario. In mid-July, draft regulations were issued in Quebec on the recovery and treatment of halocarbons. Meanwhile, a pilot program has been proposed on new white goods regulations in Manitoba as well.

Regulations such as these that are broadly calling for “circular economy” changes may be well-intentioned but are often misapplied in our industry, where the recycling of white goods, for instance, is extremely well managed and effectively regulated.

These proposals may be partly rooted in a poor understanding of our industry, including the misconception that recyclable materials are merely waste products to be controlled, not valuable resources within an important marketplace.

That’s why our advocacy efforts include not only commenting on proposed regulations but also collaborating with appliance manufacturers to demonstrate to provincial representatives how well we already handle the management of white goods. CARI is actively monitoring these proposed regulatory programs and will continue to promote the interests of the recycling industry in these matters.

If you have questions or opinions on this issue, please reach out directly to CARI President, Tracy Shaw, at 613-728-6946 or [email protected].

FAST FACTS

Ontario Blue Box Program

On July 22, Ontario’s Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Jeff Yurek, called the province’s Blue Box program “unsustainable” and announced plans to explore improved management of plastic waste through consultations with a range of stakeholders. Read Yurek’s full statement here.

CARI will closely monitor these developments and looks forward to being involved in the consultations to come.
