Times and locations have yet to be determined. Each meeting will feature guest speakers from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, who will provide information and guidelines for dealing with radioactive material

Protecting Your Business against Catastrophic Liability Judgments
Canadian courts have for many years resisted the trend toward jackpot awards for bodily injury that has plagued our neighbours south of the border. However, four recent settlements seem to indicate change is coming our way. A $24 million settlement for a brain injury and a spinal cord injury to two individuals in a single-vehicle accident in Ontario stunned those in Canadian legal circles. The cost of future care is the component driving the increase in the awards: the younger the victim, the longer the period of care required, and the higher the cost.
Common exposures that can lead to injuries include the following:
- Busy yards where heavy equipment and vehicles are coming and going
- Sidewalks and stairs that are in disrepair, or are icy
- Operation of heavy vehicles, in particular those with USA exposure
- Loading and unloading of lugger and roll-off boxes
- Contractors or employees driving their own vehicles on business for their employer
- Detrimental effects of products or processes used in the workplace that will not surface for decades (e.g., asbestos)
It is prudent to purchase liability limits that are high enough to adequately address the business’ unique exposures. This can be done cost effectively. An Umbrella Liability Policy or Excess Liability Policy is intended to “top up” other liability policies in the event that a single occurrence or a series of occurrences resulting in bodily injury or property damage exceed the limits of those primary policies. The Umbrella may also eliminate gaps in coverage and broaden the coverage provided by the first layer of liability insurance. In higher risk industries more than one umbrella liability policy is often used in a layered approach to arrive at the desired limit.
